8 ideas to make a house look brighter

By: Aprille Ross.

Living in a small house, with very few windows, I know how important it is to find ways to brighten up the interior of a home. I have 8 ideas to make a house look brighter that I thought I’d share with you. Most of these I’ve used myself and a couple are ones I picked up from helping my parents redecorate their own home. I hope you’ll find some of them useful!

     8. Add more windows
Of course putting in a few more windows or even a skylight will allow more light to come into the house, but this isn’t always possible. Not everyone can afford this type of remodeling, even though
many would love to. Sometimes simply replacing old windows can brighten up a room. I’ve seen older windows become cloudy, due to a leaky seal and this causes the entire window to allow less light in through it.

      7. Have light colored curtains

Taking off those thick, dark drapes and replacing them with some sheer curtainscan do wonders for a room’s brightness. The sheerness of the curtains not only allows more light to come in through each window, but it also lightens up the room more when these are a pale color themselves. I took down some dark green curtain panelsand replaced them with a gauze material that was light blue. I was amazed at how bright the room became.

      6. Use paint that is bright and/or light

Rooms that are dark and dreary can use a fresh coat of light colored paint for a quick makeover. Pastels, cream, and white will reflect a lot more light than darker colors will. Even if there aren’t any windows in the room, the overhead light will bounce off of the lighter color on the walls and brighten up the room a lot. Paint is also much cheaper than wallpaper and quicker to apply. I find that the color yellow not only brightens up a room, but it is also such a cheery color.

      5. Hang mirrors on walls facing windows

By hanging a mirror on the wall across from a window, the light will be allowed to bounce off of the mirror and spread around the room more. A large mirror will allow more light to be reflected, while many smaller mirrors will provide light and can be arranged in a fun pattern. There are also mirrored candle holders that take the light from a single candle and spread it around the room in multiple directions. This technique can also be used with a large mirror and a lamp, in windowless rooms.

      4. Bring in artificial lighting

Some rooms don’t have windows at all. These spaces require lamps and overhead lighting to create a brighter atmosphere. Track lightingconsists of multiple little lights that are placed along a wire track. These are perfect for dark corners and areas where it’s not possible to place a standing lamp. The addition of even just one more lamp can greatly increase the overall brightness of a room.

      3. Get a white or cream rug for the floor

I noticed how much brighter my living room was when the walls were painted a light shade of yellow, so I thought I’d try adding a lighter colored rug to the floor and see if it made any difference. I bought a cream colored area rug to hide most of the dark brown shag. I couldn’t believe the difference this single change made to the brightness of the room.

      2. Open the doors

On nice days, I try to have the front and back doors wide open. Not only does this allow more light to come in, but the cats enjoy lying in the doorway and looking outside. It provides light for me and entertainment for them. Since I live out in the country, I can also open the curtains all the way and not worry about neighbors peering inside. Not having any curtains at all eliminates the blockage of sunlight, which makes the room nice and bright.

     1. Rearrange the furniture
You’d probably be surprised at how often light is blocked by the couch or an easy chair. Making sure to keep furniture from being placed in front of a window will ensure that as much light as possible can pass through. Even tall plants placed in front of a window keep light from coming in as strong as it would if there wasn’t a plant at all.

I hope these 8 ideas to make a house look brighter work well for you. Trying a few ideas out on your own home will allow you to see just how much difference can be made. Have you already tried any of the above ideas and had success? Are there other ways you’ve found to brighten up your home? Please feel free to share any ideas you have.

keeping wood furniture looking new

With nearly any type of furniture you use to decorate your home, there are special care-taking guidelines you will need to abide by if you want the furniture to last you for years to come or if trying to impress when renting out a room. From some renters, furniture purchases are symbolic of having reached a place of independence in their lives; for others, these purchases are exclusively practical, oftentimes expensive, and accordingly meant to last for the duration. It can be very disheartening to discover that your treasured furnishings have become faded or damaged. Fortunately, the effort you will find yourself putting into the ongoing upkeep for your items is relatively simple.
For nearly any type of furniture you have, whether constructed of wood or another element, there are a couple of standards that apply equally to all. These guidelines include not overexposing your furniture to either heat or direct sunlight. If you have a piece of furniture that is permanently wedged against a window that ushers in strong sunlight, and is rarely curtained, you will probably have to contend with fading at some point. Try to keep important pieces of furniture, for the majority of the time, out of the sun's rays to best maintain the vibrancy of the original colors.

Ongoing Upkeep of Wood Furniture

With the proper upkeep, you should be able to maintain the integrity and like-new appearance of your wood furniture until such a time as you choose to upgrade furnishings or redecorate. Some people discover that, with an attentive touch and an appropriate polish, they can actually obtain older, dull looking items and restore them so that they look new once again. If you are a renter operating on a relatively tight budget, you may make a routine of looking around for quality, used furniture to restore. Once you have fixed any broken parts, thoroughly cleaned the older furniture items, and applied a new finish or seal as needed, your process of keeping older furniture looking new will be the same as it would be for maintaining your newly purchased items.
In addition to keeping wood furniture out of direct sunlight, it is advisable to wipe it down regularly with a lint-free cloth. This serves to remove everyday dust and the appearance of dullness. You will probably also want to find some type of furniture polish to keep your wooden chairs, coffee tables, t.v. stands, etc. looking the way they looked when you first purchased them. There are common polishes that work for a wide variety of furnishings. If you are concerned at all about how specific properties of your furniture item (such as its finish) will react with a certain polish, make sure to thoroughly read over the information on the polish. One important thing you will want to aim for is always using the same type of polish on your tables and other items. When you apply polish, do so in the direction of the grain rather than against it.

Keeping wood furniture looking new also entails keeping especially hot items away from it. You make have seen an example of why this recommendation matters if you have ever removed a hot dish from the oven, or microwave, and set it on a wooden counter area without a potholer beneath it. What you typically see when intense heat of this variety meets a wooden surface is a discoloration of the material. There will quite often be a spot that appears blanched compared to the surrounding wood. For this reason, it is important to place a buffer of some sort below hot places before setting them down.

Is Wood Flooring Good For You?

When you choose a flooring material for your home, what factors will you likely consider? Do you want it to enhance the design elements in your home? Should it be something that will add value to your property? Or is easy maintenance your main concern? These and many other factors are often a new homeowner’s concern when building their homes.

Wood flooring is one of the best flooring choices available today. Unlike any other flooring materials, wood provides warmth and an easy feeling on the feet. For kitchens that are generally used for cooking, relaxation and entertainment, wood flooring is a good choice. This works especially well in an open design kitchen that joins the dining area or the family room. Wood flooring does not only provide a good design element, it is also readily available in a variety of choices. There are many shades and grain patterns to suit your design scheme and style. Choose light colored woods like ash for contemporary designs; while dark color woods like walnut will go well with country designs. Pine can enhance the traditional or country look of your house. Parquet floors are often the designer’s choice for a more formal look. For a more interesting approach, choose a wood color that contrasts the color of your cabinets and furniture. Combining different kinds of wood will also create an attractive design. You can use one wood for the main section and another will serve as border or accent. Wood floors can be dressed up with a parquet inset or borders. Borders will usually help define the space.

Bear in mind that the flooring you select in a showroom may look different, once installed in your home. This usually depends on several factors like the available natural and artificial lighting. This may look either lighter or darker in your own space than in the showroom.

According to Real Estate Agents, houses with wood flooring usually sell faster than carpeted homes. This means that wood flooring add value to your homes.
Contrary to what most of us think, wood flooring is practically easy to maintain. With just simple vacuuming and sweeping, any wood floor can withstand years of service. However, it is also necessary to provide protection to your wood flooring from moisture and scratches. Routine maintenance is also advisable. This can be in the form of a hardwood cleaner application. Most designers recommend that a clear water-based finishing material should be used for wood flooring in the kitchen or bath. This type of material is easy to recoat and touch up. This is especially beneficial in areas where heavy traffic is often anticipated and recoating is often a possibility. However, pre-finished flooring has by far the most durable finish. This is because of the factory-applied acrylic finish, which coats and penetrates the surface. Although pre-finished wood flooring is expensive, it can last more years than your ordinary wood flooring. Additionally, use slip resistant rugs in areas where there is heavy traffic to protect the wood floor from wear and tear.

Finally, wood flooring contributes to a healthy living environment. It does not trap dust mites or mold therefore contributing to a better indoor air quality.

Home Improvement 101: How To Make Your Kitchen Appear Larger

Written by:

The kitchen is a great place for family and friends to come together, however if you live in an apartment or the city chances are that your kitchen is fairly small. Here are a few tips to help make your kitchen appear larger and more inviting for those family gatherings.

  Flooring

Consider using a light colored flooring option. Something that matches your kitchen walls and cabinetry will help open up your kitchen. You’ll also want to try and match the flooring to the room that connects to your kitchen. Any abrupt change will make a clear division between your kitchen and other rooms, making it appear smaller. Also, try and avoid using patterns.  They tend to make a kitchen appear smaller.

A few flooring options to consider:
Linoleum flooring provides you with a variety of options. It comes in hundreds of patterns and design colors, it’s easy to maintain and clean.

Wood flooring can make your kitchen look larger especially if you use long wood planks. Make sure to install the wood perpendicular to your cabinets.

Marble, while expensive, can be a good option for a small kitchen. It can make your floor the focal point, causing the eye to move down and making your kitchen appear more spacious.

  Lighting

Proper lighting not only helps with creating an illusion of more space, but it’s also great for making your kitchen appear warm and inviting… perfect for the next family dinner! Try using decorative lighting or hanging lights to make your kitchen appear more attractive and spacious.

  Glass

The use of glass, or frosted glass, can fool the eye and think that there’s more space than there really is. Try removing a few of the cabinet doors and replacing the solid fronts with glass. This will help with making the walls appear further away as it makes you gaze into the depths of the cabinets, pulling your eye away from the frames. If you do install glass cabinet doors, make sure that you keep the inside of your cabinets orderly. Clutter makes a room feel crowded, which brings me to my next point.

Avoid Clutter

Clutter takes up visual and physical space, making even the largest of rooms seem tiny and cramped. It can also wear on your mind and affect home security. To the most of your kitchen and maintaining peace of mind, rid it of all clutter. Some ideas for reducing your kitchen of its clutter:

 * Hanging a pot rack to store your pots and pans so that you can free up your cabinets for other kitchen appliances and dinnerware
 * Install an in-door cabinet organizer to store cooking spices and other utensils
 * Use of well-placed shelves not only allows your kitchen to look larger by storing appliances that would otherwise clutter your countertops, but it can also make your kitchen look more attractive
 * Keep your refrigerator door clean; if you want to store pictures and magnets, think about a well-placed bulletin board, or put them on the side
 * Remove anything that doesn’t belong in the kitchen. Keys, mail, and other junk should be moved out of the kitchen. Organizers that hang on the wall can also be made or purchased for these items to keep them off the counter.
 * When you open up your countertop space, you’ll notice that your kitchen looks more roomy and spacious.
 * We hope some of these ideas helped inspire a remodeling or clean up project of your own. Play around with different ideas – be creative and let your imagination work. Then share them with us!

5 Signs You Need to Remodel Your Kitchen

Are you trying to determine whether or not you should remodel your kitchen? Everyone knows that remodeling a kitchen is one of the biggest steps you can take to increase the value and functionality of a home, but how do you know if it is the right move for you? By taking a closer look at these top 5 signs you need to remodel your kitchen, you will be able to determine if a kitchen remodeling project is in your future.

Sign #1: You are Getting Ready to Sell Your Home

If you are getting ready to sell your home, you definitely want to remodel your kitchen if it is unattractive or outdated. The kitchen is one of the biggest selling points to a home, so even a few simple changes can really give you a boost in value.

Sign #2: You Don’t Have Enough Storage Space

If you don’t have enough storage space for all of your kitchen appliances, pots, pans, flatware, and utensils, it may be time to remodel. Not only should you have plenty of space for your items, they should be easily accessible as well.

Sign #3: You Don’t Have a Work Triangle
All kitchens should have a work triangle, which is a triangle that is formed when drawing imaginary lines from your major kitchen workstations. With a work triangle, your kitchen work can flow easily. If your kitchen, oven, and counter workspace are spread far apart, on the other hand, cooking can be much more of a hassle than it should be.

Sign #4: Your Appliances are Outdated
If you have outdated appliances, remodeling your kitchen may be a necessity. Not only will an upgrade make your kitchen look more attractive, it will make cooking far easier and more efficient.

Sign #5: Something Has Been Damaged
If your floor, walls, plumbing, or any other aspect of your kitchen has experienced damage, remodeling the space can help repair the damage while also preventing future damage from occurring. One of the easiest ways to get going to is to contact a reputable kitchen contractor to help build the kitchen of your dreams!
